The Rectory Boys’ Varsity B Basketball team started their season competing against Pomfret Schools’ Thirds team in Colhoun Gymnasium at Rectory School last Saturday (12/4). Rectory’s team has 13 players and two coaches: Coach Guertin and Coach Malagon. Today, I will go over the rest of the season for the team and get to know the coaches and players.

It’s fair to say that our first game didn’t go well, but it wasn’t terrible at all. We lost the game (25-76), even though players like Jerry D. (8 points/2 3 PT) and Nicolas Z. (7 points) showed us an outstanding performance. Coach Guertin stated, “I think the first game nerves are out of our system. After that game, we’ll be a lot better prepared for the next one.” Here is what Ethan L. had to say about the first game, “I feel that we already had a tough first game, but if we get things together because we already have good plays, we can definitely get better results.”

Overall, Coach Guertin thinks greatly about the team and looks forward to the rest of the season. He answered how he felt about the first game, and he talked about his team’s strengths and weaknesses. “I think the first-game nerves are out of our system. After that game, we’ll be a lot better prepared for the next one. I think our greatest strength is our ability to listen, and play as a team and I think our greatest weakness is not having a lot of experience and as the season goes they will become more comfortable.” He also talked about his main vision of the team and what he’s looking for players to do. “The main vision of the team is for there to be equal contributions to scoring, defense, and attitude. I think I will look for us to have a short memory so when things do not go well in a game, we have the mindset of making up for a mistake rather than pouting.”

One player on the team Ethan L. also stated how he feels about the first game, and what he will work on from now on. “I feel that we already had a tough first game but if we get things together because we already have good plays, we can definitely get better results. I will try my best to work more with our teammates and focus on better cooperation.”

Yesterday, the team traveled to Eagle Hill School for their second game. Even though the team lost, it is very observant that the team’s defense got way better, since the score was 21-39. Compared to giving out 76 points last time, this time the team only gave up 39 points which is almost half of the amount last time. It seems it will be better if we can score more points.
