January- Latvia becomes the 18th member of the Eurozone. Pictured above: A Latvian couple celebrates after withdrawing their country's new currency.

It was quite a year in 2014, both nationally and abroad. Among the many tragic events, such as terrorist attacks and airplane disasters, sporting events were once again a bright spot in our lives; the winter Olympics and the World Cup Soccer matches gave many of us a reason to cheer. And though the world lost many of its brightest and best last year (see the Farewell photo at the end of the above picture gallery), each of them left the world a piece of their greatness. Some of them lived to enjoy many birthdays, while others left us way too soon, a reminder of the fragility and ephemeralness of life. As Lailah Gifty Akita states in her book, Think Great: Be Great: Beautiful Quotes, “We must live life and treasure every moment on earth.” And with regard to the sadness and seemingly pointless tragedies of last year, Ms. Akita offers another fitting quote that I will share with you: “The difficulties of life are part of life’s journey on earth. Grace is needed for endurance.” May your new year be filled with peace, joy, and grace!
